Festival cancelled after travellers set up camp

A MAJOR event due to be held near Ringwood this weekend has been cancelled after travellers invaded the site.

Caravans have occupied part of Avon Country Park, preventing enthusiasts from staging the Festival of Transport as part of this year's Ringwood Festival.

Wessex Transport Society has been forced to scrap the event after attempts to find an alternative site ended in defeat.

The mayor of Ringwood, Brian Terry, said: "We're extremely disappointed that in this day and age it appears to be so easy for one group to destroy a pleasurable activity enjoyed by others.

"We do hope that the festival will take place at the country park again in future."
