Cabbies to boycott new taxi rank
TAXI drivers in
Southampton are
threatening to boycott
a new rank over
concerns it is too difficult
for late night
revellers to find.
As reported in yesterday's
Daily Echo, city council planners
refused to have the rank
in London Road, near the
majority of night-time venues,
because it could ruin the
look of the recently redeveloped
street.
Despite advice from the
police, taxi drivers and their
own licensing department
highways chiefs instead
allowed the rank to be located
around the corner in Bellevue
Road.
Despite having marshals on
the rank, drivers say they are
not prepared to use it amid
concerns about it being a residential
road with limited
lighting and no CCTV coverage.

They are planning a boycott
of the rank and are set to
protest by "cruising" slowly
through London Road on
Friday and Saturday nights.
Taxi union representative
Perry McMillian said: "This
is a completely inappropriate
place for the taxis to rank up.
"We are boycotting the rank
in protest at the complete lack
of understanding by the planners.
"Both Southampton City
Council and Hampshire
police say drivers need to give
the new rank a chance before
taking any action.
Licensing Sergeant Stewart
Chandler: "We accept that the
location of the rank in
Bellevue Road is not the best,
however, that is where the
highways department decided
it should be sited."
Richard Ivory, assistant
solicitor to Southampton City
Council said CCTV was being
installed to cover the new
rank and lighting issues
addressed. "If, after two
months of trying the new
rank, they have concerns then
we will sit down and look at
them but there is no point
jumping on this bandwagon
after one weekend."

To be fair, for many London Road revellers, it would be too difficult to find their own bottoms with both hands and a map, so the taxi drivers are probably on a loser anyway.

So the taxi drivers want to boycott a rank that is situated in obe of the busiest parts of town......Go ahead. You fools have no busness sense. You have put up you fares and at a time where peole have less cash flow, which is only going to get less, you want to pick and choose when you make your money.
Isn't it a case that you should be trying to earn as much as possible now to cover the iminent leane times. Go ahead, go and sit at Leisure world or in the centre of town where you will have to share the same number of punters between more of you and therefore you make less profit. Genius. Ever asked why more and more people are staying at home or using more local pubs? Simple. Because its too hard to get a taxi anyway but it'll be harder now. You guys are just shooting yourselves in the foot. Yes the council have made another huge error of judgement but you guys are just compounding the mistake.

Is this next bit worded right?
[quote]Taxi union representative Perry McMillian said: "This is a completely inappropriate place for the taxis to rank up.
"We are boycotting the rank in protest at the complete lack of understanding by the planners.[/quote]
Because that’s the way it looks.
If so I’m a taxi driver and not aware of this but I don’t belong to any of the many different associations that seem to make all the decisions for us.
But everyone you are still missing the point here
[bold]It only has space for 3 taxi's on the Bellevue rank[/bold] , so if its full with its 3 taxi's then we will just drive passed ( in search of another empty space on a rank) and be flagged further down London Rd
Also if coming out of town up London rd then we can also be flagged before even reaching the rank. Which we are legally allowed to do.
It’s not the rank that is the problem it’s the location and the size of it that is the problem
Why take away the Bedford places rank and London rd’s rank which worked well and in total had space for over 12 taxi’s and replace it with Bellevue rd’s 3 car rank.
I won’t boycott the rank but I also know I won’t even reach it as I will have my light on if my taxi is empty and will be flagged down before I even get to it.
This will all soon pass. The rank is destine to fail. And the Taxi drivers will be blamed for the Highways mistakes.
Guys why don’t you ask for our input when deciding these things we are out there, we know what people want and where the best places are to put the ranks.
[bold]We would be glad to help you because putting a rank in Bellevue rd goes to show you haven’t got a clue[/bold]

Tax payers money was used to provide a facility for private users......so put up or shut up. Taxi's can use bus lanes, turn in & out at the bottom end of London Road and have 3 ranks in the area.
The ranks at Bellevue & Carlton have new white lighting and there is a new CCTV mast (just waiting for its camera) right next to the rank...there are even litter bins for all those kebabs to be put in before they fall into the taxi.

We(the police)rejected this rank in Bellevue rd for 2 main reasons-nothing to do with the taxi drivers at all.they are-people will have to navigate a very busy junction and as most people have had a few too many this is going to be too dangerous.2 we wanted to keep the rank in london rd to keep all the people in the same place this will help our control of the crowds moving it to Bellevue rd is spreading the people out plus this is a residential road could cause problems with noise.

The council have already made the rank in london rd as part of the road improvments and there was a nice big woodern sign saying taxi-rank-this has now gone,so why did they build the rank if it now is not being used, all the layby and kirbs for the rank are there from the vasity to junk.

All you people complaining, you all think you know best, but until you have actually done the job, dont criticise. Perhaps you should go out there pass the test to have a Hackney Carriage licence, and then deal with the minoruty rif raf of general public on a Friday and Saturday night. Some of them really abusive, drunk, and horrible and you do not realise this until they get into your cab. The Hackney Carriage Driver deserves a medal for putting up with the minority dregs of society on a Friday and Saturday night.

RE-SUBMITTED AS THE TAXI GANGSTERS HAVE INUNDATED THE ECHO WITH COMPLAINTS TO REMOVE.
Shut up loud mouth cab drivers.
1) It was only a day ago, you taxi drivers were telling the world how much money you make. Now your playing the poverty card. Like pampered little children that bully their way in life, until they can't get their own way, and then use tears as a last resort. PATHETIC!
Typical whingeing cabbie that needs their ar$e wiped!
2)As for a challenge, sat down all day ripping off old ladies (and we know you do it all the time, so stop using the "It's on a meter guv'nor" line) and eating fast foods, is not a job.
3) We don't give a rats if there is another rank, it's you, the money and road grabbers that want it. The public is not in the slightest worried as a whole. As usual it's YOU that are screaming for YOURS and YOURS alone benefit.
4)Typical Perry MacMilitant tactics, bulldoze our way into submission.
This is not about taxi ranks, this is about a group of wannabe politicians, that are out for themselves.

Whoever you are Lee, sorry mate, but some mouth of a driver is looking to get at you.
And just for the drivers who will take it upon themselves to go mob handed - as they are gutless unless in a group - you are a gutless bunch of losers with no spines.
I am one of the many, that are fed up with useless taxi drivers taking over the streets. There are too many drivers and ranks already, and we only seem to have badly educated slobs.
Now phone in the echo and demand this removal, you lowlifes.
You think shouting and screaming mob handed will work.
The council are on to you, also the police and now the public.
The only support i see for you, is yourself.

I just wasted more time reading through all this junk, Flare and back stabbing.
Really guys get a life.
This just takes the focus of the real problem
Which is what‘s the easiest and safest way to get everyone home at the end of the night
And Taxi drivers, Police, licensing and Jo public all seem to agree that having the Rank in London rd was and still is the best option.
But the buck is passed to the local highways as the officials are saying they are the ones that decided against it even though the police and licensing lobbied for it
(if you ask me London' rd's new development was a balls up from the beginning)
Even the parking is the wrong way. Go pass a parking space then try to reverse into it whilst someone drives right up behind you. Great idea guys
So what happens next and how long before the Highway admits to their mistake and rectifies it
It’s easy guys a marshalled rank in London road for at least 10 taxis and there the problem is solved
Also might be a good idea to scatter some night ranks about outside some of the more busy places like Jesters and Reflex something like double green lines where the parking places are now to signify a night time rank this will also help to get people home at the end of a night and wont block up the roads
Surly this is the easiest solution

If i thought for one second it would be you on your own, i wouldn't blink at it, sadly MOB HANDED is all taxi drivers know. You have already given the name of some unsuspecting fella, of which you were wrong about, and have not apologised.
How about giving your full name and address, so he, or anyone who may know him, has a chance to respond at your front door
Only a loudmouth cabbie would turn someones point of view into a reason to avenge what he does not want to hear.
You have proved most peoples beliefs on this site, taxi drivers moan, threaten and twist their yellow livers to get their own way.
Sadly, you are the same gutless people, that should be ambassadors for our town. What a joke you are.
Being the loud mouth asking for my name, i take it you will leave yours???
Yes? no? Yes? no????
I thought not.

I think the point is, these people do not deserve to be given more than they need.
The above is pretty indicative of the taxi drivers as a whole. I say as a whole, because the odd one or two are good for the town.
It's clear from some ot the drivers on here, they do not deserve our money.
Any other service would die on it's feet with the down right disgusting service that these people give.
Another rank is another headache, another piece of the ever increasing theft of our streets.
This is not about safety, THIS IS ABOUT THE CAB DRIVER, MAKE NO MISTAKE !

I think you are right it has been known for a cabbie to get lucky.
Mind you, looking at the greasy fat slob wifes of cabbies i've seen, including Perry McMilitants, luck is a word i would not use.
She was in the Bedford one night and asked for a drink, so the landlord put a bowl outside the front door!!
Oh, how i love my humor.
