Plea for traffic calming after fatal crash
HIGHWAY chiefs are being urged
to install traffic calming measures
near the spot where two men were
killed in a crash.
Residents living at Lepe Road, Fawley, say
action must be taken to curb the speed of
traffic using the narrow country route.
A Subaru was attempting to negotiate a
right-hand bend on June 7 when it left the
road and smashed into a tree.
The driver, Brett Richardson, 27, of
Mansfield Road, Gosport, and one of his
passengers, Steven Ritchie, 24, of
Marchwood Military Port, were both
killed.
Mr Richardson's other passenger, a 21-
year-old Calshot man was seriously injured.
The accident happened just south of Stone
Cottages, which are opposite the junction of
Lepe Road and Stanswood Road.
An identical collision occurred at the same
spot in March 1982. A car careered off the road
and hit a tree, killing two men and seriously
injuring a third.
Stuart Harding, who lives nearby, said: "We
have had problems here over the years.
"There's a long, straight piece of road before
you get to the corner, but there isn't even a sign
warning of a bend."
Neighbour Kevin Rolls said: "We need some
traffic calming. People come down here at night
and tend to drift across the road."
Lee Dunsdon, county councillor for South
Waterside, described Lepe Road and Stanswood
Road as "a nasty little rural junction".
Commenting on the fact that two fatal crashes
had occurred at the same spot he said: "I think
it's something the county council should probably
be looking at."
Police are continuing to investigate the cause
of the latest collision.
A county council spokesman said: "We will
visit the site of the accident, if we haven't done
so already, and see if any engineering measures
might be required."
Asked if common factors could have been
involved in both collisions she said the 26-year
gap between the two accidents was too great to
enable the authority to draw any reliable conclusions.
A police spokesman added: "I believe this
would be a matter for the inquest."

So, some speedfreak hothead in a Scoobydoo takes a corner to fast and gets his comeuppance and suddenly it's up to the poor old tax payer to stump up for 'traffic calming' measures. How about a speed camera, that should do the trick.
Or better still, why don't these idiots slow down at a sharp bend ? Won't be doing that again anyway.

It's always sad at the loss of any life. However when you drive a car you are in control of a dangerous weapon. When will people learn to stick to speed limits. They are imposed for a reason and that reason is not designed to annoy the motorist. I'm sure that the inquest will give details of the speeds and conditions of the road, driver etc when the accident occurred. Then we should make judgements on whether traffic calming should be put in place. I would be far more in favour of the money being spent on the appalling condition of the road surface between Rollestone Cross roads and Langley Tavern.

Surely we should be chopping down trees so close to the roadside, making a run-off area if you do lose it on the apex of a corner. This would saves lives.

Is the fact that the road bends not enough of a sign that there's a bend? Or the fact that there are trees in front of you rather than open road? You've even got a long straight bit of road before hand to prepare yourself.

I have fond that the satnav cannot give you a optimal read out of the route of a road at high speed, several times I have come-up fast on a hairpin that has not shown up on the satnav screen untill after I have slid round it. Until the technology can keep up with a car I think they should put bigger warnings of approaching bends. Is there a download-able upgrade that can dpeed up a Tom Tom?

I did more damage than that to my Scooby when I caught a deer head-on last winter. It roasted up lovely but worked out about £100 per pound.....

If not suggest you take an IAM advanced driving course - then you will learn how to approach a corner and exit safely at speed! You should not need any amount of road signs to tell you whats ahead - your brain should do that for you!!

There are lots of very silly comments on here, I was nearly hit on this road recently by two morons in Novas, not sure if they were 1.0's or the mighty 1.2's, racing eachother. These mindless lunatics had obviously only been driving for a few months & have no understanding whatsoever of the danger they cause to everyone else & probably won't until they kill someone. Unfortunately, even the price of Insurance & Fuel can't price these people off the road, so we have to live with them & wll have to install something on the road, at great expense, to force them to slow down, as they are incapable of understanding that if a road is narrow & has bends in it, it might be advisable to slow down. It is always sad when someone dies, particularly when their own actions appear to have contributed,but at the same time, Im glad to see another Subaru off the road.

Yes it may encourage people to speed..but as so many people have pointed out, when people die its the family and friends that suffer. The front passenger Steven who died was someone I loved very much.. and i know since the night he died his family and friends have felt so hollow and empty..as I'm sure Bretts family do. So if chopping down a few trees could save so many people from hurting like this then i wish they would. The boys are gone..but we're the ones suffering.

Nonsense, this was a bunch of lads out having a bit of fun in their car. Surely we should be chopping down trees so close to the roadside, making a run-off area if you do lose it on the apex of a corner. This would saves lives.

Believe me, the car didn't look a lot better when it was wrapped aound the tree. Also it didn't hit head on, it hit side on, on its roof.
