Prost impressed by Saints' French ace
 |
| Morgan Schneiderlin |
SAINTS head coach Jan Poortvliet has welcomed new signing Morgan Schneiderlin to the club, even though he admitted never seeing the France Under-19 international kick a ball.
The 18-year-old joined from French Ligue 2 side Strasbourg on a four-year deal yesterday, for a fee that could rise to nearly £1.2m, after he was recommended by Saints' former technical director Georges Prost.
Watch a video of Saints' new signing
Schneiderlin, pictured, has been involved with the French national set-up from under-16 level and captained the under-18 side, but Poortvliet said he had not seen him in action before.
Poortvliet pleased to land Schneiderlin - watch the video here
However, he explained the young defensive midfielder had come highly recommended from Prost, who helped bring through Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale in his time at Saints.

Prost was a great coach so I hope he's done us a favour with Schneiderlin. We need to stop buying expensive hasbeens and look at the promising talent from home and abroad.

Oh dear, I respect George Prost and Morgan sounds like a good prospect, however how can a manager with a definate plan of play and tactics just get a player he has never seen play?
Does look like a good deal though.

So Ruperts had his cheque book out again I guess he is hoping for a good return on his investment through his newly regained academy.
If hes any good bet he along with anyone else from the youth system isnt here the following season.Like it or not we are to become a feeder club if Rupert remains!

On the basis of Jan being Head Coach does that mean he has nothing to do with the buying & selling of players?

He's pushed Wilde into the corner and basically, it's Ruperts show once again.
Thing is, if by some miracle Saints are a success next season, Rupert will be crowing from the rooftops about how HE has made it happen. If Saints are a failure, he'll blame everyone else and sack Poortvliet for his "bad signings".

Perhaps, and I know this is a bit far fetched, perhaps Lowe is actually interested in trying to get Saints back into the promised land of the Premiership as is not purely after making a quick buck for himself, a long shot I know, but stranger things have happened!

Our 2nd defensive midfielder signing of the transfer window - dare I say we'll be seeing the likes of Wright, Safri, Idiakez and Viafara shown the door? Only time will tell!

Interested to know where the money has come from. It was only last week that they closed some of the ground and made people redundant. Maybe a gamble to secure some more season ticket sales?
Hope he works out though so good luck to the lad.

Let us have a little bit of balanced reasoning for once instead of either knocking the club down or hyping Lowe up. As it stands Lowe is putting things right after the mess he made last time and so far things are not looking too bad. I dislike Lowe for what he has done to our club in the past but so far he has settled things down financially, approved some astute signings and got me feeling a little more optomistic about the coming season than I was a few weeks ago when he returned. The silly bickering between the anti and pro Lowe brigades must stop. Not only is it very childish but it is sapping support for the club. Football fans are meant to be eternal optomists not doom and gloom merchants. Yesterdays signing as well as the others shows we are moving forward in strengthening the team. All we need to know now is who is staying and who is going. So how about you Lowe lovers and haters have a truce for a few days ans stop being insultingly rude and offensive to each other and please grow up!

How about a wonderful weekend of comments likw "Hm!! Next season is beginning to look interesting."

Seems we've returned to the collective choosing of signings that we had prior to the arrival of Redknapp and Burley. In other words the selection committee of Lowe, manager and coaches with Lowe holding the purse strings and being the only one with the power of Veto!

On the surface, the 4 new signings do look good, BUT we won't know how good the signings are until we see who they will be lining up alongside, when the season kicks off. So by all means remain optimistic but hope that we will not be losing too many of our better players, such as John (we'd have been relegated without his goals) and Davies (who plays with skill, passion & commitment) as a result of them being asked to accept a wage cut, if indeed that is what has happened.

The consultation process between Lowe and Poortvliet will be a one way street. Lowe will tell him who to buy and Poortvliet will either have to say yes, or have no new players to replace the ones that have left or are leaving (because Saints will be selling players before the end of August, of that I'm certain).
Lowe used Wilde to get back into the club and Wilde was stupid enough to believe he actually has some say at St Mary's, when in fact, Wilde has no say.
He maybe the largest single shareholder, but he has no supporters now he did the dirty on Crouch. There is no way on earth that Lowe and his old directors would back any of Wilde's suggestions.
So Tracey, Wilde probably isn't in a corner, it's more accurate to say he's locked in a cupboard and is only brought out to be Lowe's mouthpiece.

You are just being biased against Lowe...not very realistic for someone who goes by the name of realist are you?
How do you know Wilde didn't use Lowe to get back into the club? Maybe, just maybe they both say the club crumbling away and saw they had to act to prevent it from falling apart completely?
How do you know Lowe and his people woul dnever support any suggestions made by Wilde? What real evidence do you have to back that claim up? Biased opinion doesn't count ok.

It's tough looking at sums of money that would have been petty cash in the Premier league but unless we do the bank will send in the heavy boys. Personally I think we've "bottomed out" and next season will see better football and at least a mid-table position (hope so anyway).

I have no idea what the real figures are for SFC but I do know through my many years in management you can save quite a bit by nibbling away, here and there.
The unpleasant bit is always redundancy but most of us sadly had have a taste in our working lives.
I think the endless New Labour buzzword was Prudence.

Saga and Skacel will probably still be on holiday due to the Euros.
Not sure about the status of A Davis' injury and if he would be training.
Picture 8 is of Schneiderlin, complete with girly handbag. Bet he'll get some stick for that!

Which rather suggests that they have all left the club.Or are about to.

On a serious note though it is nice to see the squad actually looking relaxed and enjoying training.

Hi all saints fans, first of all I just wanted to say that me and my wife are disgusted with the city Portsmouth, we went to visit them one day and we thought it was a disgrace, any person that you walked next too, they stunk of sh!t or sweat, when I smelt it I was sick all over my wifes hair and back, since then we have been washing 5 times a day but we still cant get rid of the smell.

I apologise that this isn't really relevant to the story but I have a question.
How is opening the ground 15 mins later going to save much money. I understand that they will be saving 1/4hr in wages for the not inconsiderate number of matchday staff, but surely it would be better to open the ground earlier, attract people in with pre-match entertainment and make the club money by getting people in and spending thier money on food and drink inside the ground rather than lining someone elses pockets in the pubs and shops outside the ground?

I have written to the club about this because here in Germany people arrive early to enjoy a few drinks with friends and perhaps something to eat. The catering is done so much more sensibly and you never wait long to be served. I fail to understand why the Saints refuse to listen to fans comments about how we can sort the finances out. Personally i would think treating the fans better and lowering ticket prices a little would get more fans in and help solve a few of our problems. Closing parts of the ground is about the most negative approach we could have taken.
Sadly though Lowe doesn't care about getting fans in - just money - he doesn't seem to realise the two go hand in hand.

And do you think just because it opens 15 min sooner that they would sell that many more bugers and drinks to cover the cost of police and entertainment. and what would you like to see before a match?

I used to often arrive early to games, it really is not that busy. Mostly staff just waiting around. This is a shame though as I am sure that with correct marketing and pricing (such as the 2 b4 2 deals) many who meet elsewhere might have come earlier. The wings issue is all about staff and policing costs. Blocks 1,2,3 do get lively. Fewer staff will also mean that when the wings do open expect queues everywhere.
Back to the original story, I have used every means at my disposal (google and fm2008!) to research Morgan Schneiderlin and he seems like a really good signing. Another Yousef style midfielder.
I am still wondering if any of our out of contract players will be retained though.
I would like to see Dyer and Wright as "retainers", Dyer would fit in real well with a 433 system, and Jermaine has many detractors but has been (and will continue to be) a loyal utility player. A 433 may let him shine in his best defensive mid role.

We don't need Jermaine Wright as we have just signed 2 defensive midfielders and wayne thomas and andrew davies are capable of playing in right back.

I suppose your exams are over now, so you have more spare time to be a sad loser again.

If you have 2 people posting "Lowe Out" comments without backing the argument up does it double the quality level of debate, or halve it?

As a matter of interest, with all the complaints about Saints over the past few months, has anyone used 'the supporters charter' to make a complaint, and what was the response?

I only noticed that this morning on the official page. I have sent a mail now but having sent 3 letters to the club i have heard nothing at all. It does say all mails will receive a reply which is all you can ask for - even if they think you are a complete nutter the least they should do is be polite and reply.

Lowe has made the best signings weve made in years e.g. niemi now hes bringin in good players again[/quote] Who said they are good.
More to the point do you honesstly believe if they were good, they would sign for Southampton Leisure Holdings.
A big fat NO,is the simple answer.

All I care about is S'ton getting back into the Premiership (so we can see them play on tv over here). I don't give a **** who is in charge, or what they need to do to make the club get back up there. I`m not a Lowe hater or lover, but I must admit it takes some guts to go back to a club where alot of ppl hate you. Good luck to him I say, and here's hoping I can see S'ton on Sky (Foxtel) next year :)

Let's hope he does better for Saints than those two.
