Le God to make one last appearance in a Saints' shirt

MATT Le Tissier will make his last ever Saints appearance in Claus Lundekvam's testimonial match against Celtic.

The Saints legend has confirmed that he, along with Francis Benali, will join Lundekvam andMichael Svensson for an emotional farewell in the final 15 minutes of the game against Gordon Strachan's side.

Le Tissier has been keen to try and not take the focus away from Lundekvam but has confirmed he will also be saying a few farewells to the fans along with the big Norwegian.

He said: "I'm looking forward to it.

"I am playing in a game a few days before, so I will have recovered by then - I hope!

"I didn't want to take away from Claus' big day but it will be lovely for me and I'm very grateful that Claus has asked me to play and given me the chance to play at St Mary's and in front of the Saints fans one last time.

"I'm not getting any younger and there are no more testimonials coming up in the future, so I believe thiswill bemy last ever game for Saints and at St Mary's and the last time I will ever pull on the Saints shirt again.

"I just want to appeal to people to get their tickets and come along and support Claus on what should be a really special night."

The game doubles up as a pre-season friendly with Jan Poortvliet's first match in charge at St Mary's coming against the Scottish champions before the final 15 minutes which will feature the high profile Saints legends guest appearances.

With Lundekvam forking out a combined £250,000 sum to stage the match, which includes returfing the St Mary's pitch and fees to bring Celtic down, he needs a considerable attendance just to break even.

Le Tissier, chairman of Lundekvam's testimonial committee, has always insisted that breaking even and for everyone to have a good night is all the centre half is looking for to celebrate his 12 seasons at Saints.

Even sales of 20,000 tickets would hardly see Lundekvam pocket a penny out of the game so Le Tissier hopes that Saints fans will appreciate his gesture and get behind him so he doesn't end up out of pocket in his farewell match.

I live outside of Southampton but have decided to make this my son's first football match.
I am a football fan and I also appreciate loyalty.
All true Saints fans should also attend to show their appreciation to a player who has shown great loyalty to Southampton FC.

The thought of Le Tiss back in a Saints shirt has got my over active imagination going.
Every season the FA (FIFA/EUFA) seem to introduce a new rule into the game, so wouldn't it be a bonus if they were to take a rule from American Football and put it into our game? The rule I'm thinking of is where they allow "specialist kickers" on the pitch. In one move we would solve all the problems we have had with inconsistent corners, free kicks and penalties, since his retirement. Ok, Ok I know it would never happen, but what if..............?

I feel all true saints fans, should show there appreciation to Claus for all his years service and get to StMary. As quoted by our lovely paper, he has paid a lot of money to get this game on .I would charge all the directors triple the price plus extra 2 get in. I shall be their watching and see Le God, and I hope Claus has a fantastic night and gets back a little of the money he has shelled out for his testimonial, I still feel Saints should have coughed up for game. THANKS CLAUS FOR EVERYTHING

I hope the stadium is filled for Claus he was a great player for Saints!

On a note about the current team I have heard from a good source that Saints need to raise £5million in sales before the season starts. The players in question to go and be sold are quite a surprise. Stern John and Surman - who wants to go apparently...we would probably get about £4m for Surman on his own...Jan wants to keep Rasiak though...

Firstly I too hope st marys in packed, Claus derserves a good send off... Be good to see Svensson, Le tiss in Saints shirts again too.

I've heard Stern John & Viafara are rumoured to be sold. As for Surman it would be sad to see him go, but I don't think he's really the player alot of people think he is & to be honest we have alot of options in midfield, Holmes or Skacel can fill his position. Not sure if we would get £4m for him, then again a players worth what ever someone's willing to pay. Glad to hear Rasiak might be staying, we need his goals if we're ever gonna have a chance.

Heard any rumours of who might be coming in??? We obviously need some more options in defence & I think Clinton Morrison is out of contract & would be a good replacement for John if he's sold.

    COYR!

really? honest? Most Saints fans would say Mick Channon, or Terry Paine, or Matt Le Tissier. There have been much better players than Claus- Ken Monkou, Dean Richards, Richard Hall and Michael Svensson for starters

Oh for goodness sake. The guy said "one" of the greats and Claus is one of those. He could quite easily fit into the Saints Hall of Fame, along with Channon, Paine and Le Tiss, not to mention Shearer, Keegan, Armstrong, Moran, Williams and the great Peter Shilton.

All supporters should be there for this game. He has given 12 years of good football and we wouldn't have been in the premiership for so lomg. Lets make the night special for Claus and I am glad to see Matt and Franny supporting a good role model. Lets all get behind the team for next season and not listen to the supporters who don't even kick a football. From what I here the football will be played on the ground and not booted up the pitch. So lets look forward to seeing proer football and not expecting to win the premiership where or the money grabbers are!!!!!

Ric Flair, you are a brainless moron that has never had anything thought provoking / interesting / funny / irreverent to say in your life. Please find a message board where you can sprout your childish WWE nonsense to other cretins and keep us Saints / Football fans away from your childish nonsense. Furthermore, I fully expect you to threaten me with some kind of body slam in response to my post and would like to pre-emptively nip that in the bud by saying "JOG ON" and "GET A LIFE".

What if.....? I know where you are coming from Baz, but the next step would be a 'time out for commercial break' whenever the ball went out of play for a goal kick, corner or throw in, or even when a foul is given. The 45 minute half would turn into an hour plus, and we would have to think in terms of a two hour+ match.
While the commercials are being shown, those actually at the match would have a bunch of cheerleaders, with pom poms, attempting to liven up the crowd. Do football fans need that encouragement? I don't think so!
Nope Baz, lets stick with what we have, in the way the game is played - to many changes in rules in the last 20 years to my mind anyway.

As I said Sam, my over active imagination. I wouldn't really like to see that happen, just ruing the lack of quality on the ball, at SMS, since MLT packed up. However, I would like to see some changes made, such as going back to the "proper" offside rule that stood for so many years, where offside was offside and refs decided when players were not interfering with play. Not like now when a player can be stood slap bang in front of a goalie, in an offside position, yet when the ball whistles past him, into the net, it's given as a goal and not offside. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!!
    !
I'd also like to see substitutions handled by the 4th official without the game needing to be stopped, especially when refs only usually add on 30 seconds for somthing that can waste more than a minute. Ok when you're winning but not so good when you're losing though.

Just a thought, you say he's never had anything irreverent to say, does this mean you think he SHOULD be irreverent in his posts? I'm confused as the previous attributes you say he lacked were positives, followed by a negative.

I agree with the change where he could not pick up the ball from a back-pass, or from a throw-in, but the offside rule should return to the 'war-time' state where, if a player was in an offside position when the ball was last played, he was offside.
If he was coming back from an offside position - tough! He is an athlete, and should move faster.
He was not interfering with play - he is being PAID to interfere with play. Why the hell is he there, if it is not to interfere with play? He is offside.
We moan about match officials 'getting it wrong', and the administrators make the job more difficult for them. Get back to basics.

Substitutions. Can't agree with you. The have to come on when play is stopped, and the Ref has to be aware of who is on the pitch, and who has left. I do think, however, that the player coming off should leave the field at the nearest point on the touchline, not have to walk the width of the pitch at a very slow rate.
As subs are used tactically and not just for injuries, I think the additional 30 seconds is OK.
Between us we should be able to put the Football World to rights!

Great loyality Claus - thank you as this is now becoming a rarity, after Le Tis, Dodd & Benali.

The squad is very weak, No Full Backs, little quality or experience, especially if the club receive any offers for the players on the 'for sale' list; Safri, Saganoski, Surman, Viafara, Rasiak, Skacel, John and probably Dyer. Any rumers on Euall ?

I could live with your view on substitutions because I have seen managers send a player to the otherside of a pitch just so he can make that long slow walk back, 10 seconds later. With the offside, I understand what you're saying about players being athletes etc and should be able to get back onside. What I was thinking more of is the guy out on the left wing who had no involvement in the build up or the scoring of the goal who has wandered 6 inches offside. I think it was the late great Brian Clough who said "If they're not interfering with play what are they doing on the pitch"?
What's your view on the defence stepping up to play a forward offside?
If I am right the rules state a player should only be given offside if he is "seeking to gain an advantage by being in an offside position". If he is trying to stay onside but a defender steps up, putting him in an offside position, can it be claimed he is trying to gain an advantage?
If the officials had to decide if a player stepped up, it would obviously be difficult to police, but probably no more difficult than the "is he' isn't he active" rule they have now. It would make defenders think twice about playing boring, negative offside traps (remember Arsenal under George Graham?) if they thought the ref could tell them to go hang as "the offside player was not seeking to gain an unfair advantage it was given to him by the player that stepped up".
This wouldn't need a change of the offside rule, just a more literal interpretation of it.

I suppose that, if Peter Crouch joins Pompey, you will be one of the pratts who greet him with shouts of 'Scummer'.
Hopefully, as you get older, you will also get wiser.

When was the last time the SCUMMERS won anything, nearly 50years ago if memory serves me right and it will probably be another 50years before you win anything. So you wont see it in your lifetime you looser. Whereas we at SUPER POMPEY are now all wearing our FA CUP WINNERS SHIRTS and they fit just nice.
We are gonna heap more pain on you scum, you aint seen nothin yet.

I guess your post confirms what I had suspected, that you are a silly schoolboy, who spends more time on here than doing your homework or studying.
No! Your memory does not serve you right!
Southampton won the FA Cup in 1976, which is 32, THIRTY-TWO years ago.
If you listened to you maths teacher you may discover how you arrived at a total that was 18, EIGHTEEN years out.
Try again. Subtract 1976 from 2008, and see what you arrive at!

I don't agree with what he says, but as this is an ECHO site and NOT an SFC site, I think he has as much right to be on here as you and I do.

Did i say site you boring little man i sad thread, this thread is about Le Tissier playing in Claus Lundekvam's testimonial all ex saints players .
This thread is not about you two boring tw@ts going on about Portsmouth and the FA cup.

IF thats what you two want to do go find a thread where someone would give a sh.t what you have to say
Posted by: sailor sam, portsmouth on 10:38am Sun 6 Jul 08
I did note that you said thread. So what! I also note that when you refer to yourself you do not use a capital I, but the small one 'i'! I assume that it reflects your tiny mind, obsessed with trivialities.
If you can get someone to help you with the big words, you would have observed that at 6.21pm on Saturday, my original quote was about LeTissier, someone that I have a far higher regard for than you!
You will also note that I was not going on about Pompey winning the FA Cup, but advising another ignorant person about when SFC won the FA Cup. Presumably you have no objection to that?
With regard you last sentence, it would appear that you do give a sh.t about what I say, otherwise you would not have made the post.
I bet your mates, if you have any, call you Foggy, because you appear to be pretty thick!

Honest! I am not trying to wind up 'always the same' by introducing another post that has got nothing to do with Matt LeTissier or Claus' testimonial.
I have just looked on teletext, and read the following:-
SOUTHAMPTON. Former England striker Alan Shearer will be offered the boss's job if a buyout is successful. (Star).

    Any news on that front?

It is calimed that 'Boring' is the favourite is the favourite word of kiddies these days, especially at weekends and school holidays. "Mum! I'm bored" indicating that the kiddies do not have the initiative to think of something to do, and need someone to think for them.
All this would indicated that my suspicions about you are correct. A schoolboy, who can think of nothing better than to make inane comments.
Our country's future is in your hands!

I shall ferret around a bit more but rumours, just rumours.

"It's rumoured that if Graham keeps buying the tickets, he might win the lottery".

My offer for SFC was, in fact, successful and I have purchased the club for £25.00 of my Tesco vouchers as they quadruple up for special buys like this one.

Alan has been offered the job but says he could never manage a Club where the fans can't spill properly and split their infinitives.

What's all this about hamsters and turtles anyway.

I think that I have the gist of your post Stainly, but perhaps you could be less reticent and more explicit! Don't be shy. What exactly is your problem?
Is it an inferiority complex, because the name you have chosen is associated with an inferior team?
Perhaps it is because you live in a city with no 'WOW' factor.
Could it possibly be that you are green with envy because your near neighbours have experienced success and Wembley, and will be making their THIRD visit of the year next month, when your team have not known success there this century.
Maybe you are bitter because the only BIG club you can attract for a pre-season friendly is the Mighty Stoke City.
Whatever your problem, do not be afraid to leave a note on here for me, and I will try to give you the benefit of my vast experience, built up over many years, supporting Hampshire's only Premier League Club.

Have a nice day! Please pass on my regards to your popular leaders, the inspired Rupert Lowe and the leader of all Southampton FC's supporters, Nick Illingsworth.

You certainly do know how to pick them don't you?
