Carberry rewarded with England call-up
Hampshire batsman Michael Carberry is one of five uncapped players in England's 30-man ICC Champions Trophy squad.
The 27-year-old has joined James Tredwell (Kent), Graeme Onions (Durham) and Nottinghamshire duo Samit Patel and Darren Pattinson in the provisional squad.
It will be reduced to a 15-man party by August 11 and if Carberry makes the cut he will miss Hampshire's last Championship match of the season, against Surrey at the Brit Oval, as the ICC Champions Trophy takes place from September 11-20 in Pakistan.
England's opening match is against Sri Lanka in Karachi on September 14.
National selector Geoff Miller said: "Although the 30-man ICC Champions Trophy squad is extensive it contains some exceptional talent and a strong mix of youth and experience.
"The ICC Champions Trophy will give us the chance to test our One-Day International side against the best in the world and I know the players will be looking forward to the challenge of improving our current ODI ranking. We will continue to monitor performance in the lead up to narrowing the squad."
Carberry's Hampshire teammates Kevin Pietersen, Chris Tremlett and Dimitri Mascarenhas are also in the ICC Champions Trophy squad alongside Andrew Flintoff and Simon Jones.
And Tremlett has retained his place in England's 12-man Test squad for the opening match of the series against South Africa at Lord's next week.
If he is left out he should be available for Hampshire's next Championship match, against a Lancashire side including Andrew Flintoff at the Rose Bowl next week.
England will also become the first-ever country to name an unchanged line-up for six consecutive Test matches if Tremlett is not needed at Lord's.
ICC Champions Trophy squad: Broad, Sidebottom, Swann, Patel and Pattinson (Notts); Collingwood, Mustard, Onions and Plunkett (Durham); Carberry, Pietersen, Tremlett and Mascarenhas (Hampshire); Joyce, Shah and Strauss (Middlesex); Flintoff and Mahmood (Lancashire); Bopara and Cook (Essex); Ambrose and Bell (Warwickshire); Prior and Wright (Sussex); Anderson (Lancashire), Bresnan (Yorkshire), Jones (Worcestershire), Key (Kent), Panesar (Northants), Tredwell (Kent).
