Couple feared lost in China earthquake are found safe

A Hampshire couple feared missing in the China earthquake have been found safe.

Family and friends were today relieved to hear that retired couple David and Diane Atkins have been found.

There had been fears for the couple, from Portchester, who had been visiting a panda reserve.

Their daughter Lisa Staples, 39, from Portsmouth, said: ''I spoke to mum, she was in the helicopter and she was just told to say 'I'm safe'. She said she would contact us when they get to their destination.

"My dad is fine too. I'm just so relieved that they are OK - it's so amazing. We have been trying to keep busy since Monday. My mum told me they had been trapped in the panda sanctuary so a three-hour trip has turned into a three days."

Mr Atkins, 64, and his 63-year-old wife have travelled the world since they retired and they were part of the organised trip with 17 other Britons.

Former postmaster Mr Atkins and wife, left Heathrow on Sunday May 4 and are due back on Monday May 19.
